How to be Photogenic

Secret No. 1: Turn partially sideways to the camera, planting one foot in front of the other. Point your toe to the camera and place your weight on your back foot.

Secret No. 2: Pull head forward slightly to minimize any appearance of a double chin.

Secret No. 3: Hold arms slightly away from your body. This keeps upper arm flab from flattening out and therefore appearing flabbier (much like thighs do when one sits on a couch).

Secret No. 4:  Pull shoulders back, chest forward and gently suck stomach in. Be careful not to suck stomach so far in that your ribs show, thereby causing those who later see the photo to cluck to themselves in a bemused, sing-song voice, "She's sucking i-in."

Secret No. 5: If you can get away with it without looking like a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Girl wannabe, try the look away trick. To do this, look away from the camera, then turn towards it, breaking into a smile just before the camera clicks. Your smile will appear fresh, not frozen. This trick takes practice behind closed, locked doors.

Secret No. 6: When taking a photo it's also important the photographer does not snap the picture from below. This adds another 20-50 pounds to the 10 pounds automatically and annoying added by the camera. Ever have one of those photos where you are thinking, "Do I really look like that??" - chances are the photo was taken at a lower angle.

More tips on looking 10 pounds thinner in photos:

Use objects you are holding to your advantage by placing them in front of parts of you you'd prefer to hide. A purse or corsage in front of your belly. A jacket slung over the shoulder.

Check out Spanx hosiery. The very modern version of the corset, Spanx are famous for making women all over the world appear 10 pounds thinner. (Don't invest in the panty hose, like most hose, they tend to tear and these are pricey).

Fake tans will make you look and feel skinnier.

It's not just black that makes you look thinner. Wearing an entire outfit of just one color will do the trick as well, whether it be white, beige, brown, blue or red. One color tends to elongate your figure.

How to Increase your Metabolism

If you're trying to lose weight, increasing your metabolism can enable you to lose more weight without cutting more calories. The first commercialism surrounding "metabolism-enhancing products" has made it difficult to separate fact from fiction (or advertising), but here you can find a few research-based suggestions.

1. Understand what metabolism is. In the simplest terms, metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. Very few people have a fast metabolism, and overweight individuals generally have slow metabolisms because their fat cells are consuming energy. However, a faster metabolism will enable you to lose more weight than your friend, even if you both have the same activity level, diet, and weight.

2. Determine what is influencing your metabolism. There are some factors that you can change, and some factors that you can't.

  • Age - metabolism decreases five percent per decade after age 40
  • Sex - men generally burn calories more quickly than women because they have more muscle tissue
  • Heredity - you can inherit your metabolic rate from previous generations
  • Thyroid disorder - hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) can slow down or speed up metabolism, but only 3 and .3 percent of the population have hypo- and hyperthyroidism.

3. Calculate your resting metabolic rate (RMR). RMR is often used interchangeably with basal metabolic rate (BMR); although they are slightly different, estimating either is sufficient for the purpose of losing weight. To calculate your RMR, use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (which is more reliable than the Harris-Benedict equation). There are also calculators online that can do this for you:

  • RMR = 9.99w + 6.25s - 4.92a + 166g-161
  • w = weight in kilograms; if you know your weight in pounds, divide by 2.2 to get your weight in kilograms
  • s = height in centimeters; if you know your height in inches, multiply by 2.54 to get your height in centimeters
  • a = age in years
  • g = gender = 1 for males, 0 for females

4. Adjust your diet accordingly. Your RMR will tell you how many calories you need to maintain your body at rest. Your daily consumption to maintain your weight should be:

  • RMR x 1.15
  • E.g. RMR = 2000, so the maintenance intake is 2000 x 1.15 = 2300
To lose weight safely, do not exceed your maintenance intake or have a caloric intake lower than your calculated RMR.
  • Count calories by recording what you eat and looking up how many calories each food item contains (either on the food packaging or in tables provided in books or online).

5. Eat small, frequent meals. Extending the time between meals makes your body go into "starvation mode," which decreases your metabolism as a means to conserve energy and prevent starvation. Skipping meals does not help you cut calories or lose weight; in fact, people generally eat less overall when they eat small, frequent meals. In addition to having four to six small meals per day eating healthy snacks will also increase metabolism.

6. Drink water. As with food, depriving your body of water can encourage it to "hoard" rather than "burn". More than ninety percent of the chemical reactions in your body occur in water, so make sure you drink an appropriate amount of water.

7.Boost metabolism temporarily with aerobic exercise. Different activities burn different quantities of calories, but the important thing is to raise your heart rate and sustain the activity for approximately thirty minutes.

8. Boost metabolism in the long run with weight training. Muscle burns more calories than fat does (73 more calories per kilogram per day, to be exact) so the more muscle you build, the higher your resting metabolic rate (RMR) will be. Every muscle cell that you gain is like a little factory that constantly burns calories for you, even while you sleep, and revs up when you exercise. This is the only way to increase RMR, which accounts for 60 to 70 percent of the calories you burn daily.

How to Remove a Red Wine Stain

1. Blot the stain immediately with paper towels. If it is a dry clean only garment do not pretreat the stain and get it as fast as you can to the cleaners. Pretreatment of the stain can cause irreversible damage and the dry cleaner may not be able to remove the stain.

2. Combine 1 teaspoon laundry soap (or dish soap, like Dawn) and 1 cup hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl. Soak a clean sponge in the mixture, squeeze it halfway dry, then gently blot the stain.

3. Place a dry towel or washcloth between the front and back of the garment if the stain has not penetrated through to the back of the fabric. This will prevent staining on the back of the material.

4. Review the washing instructions on the label of the fabric. Heed any special care instructions.

5. Wash in cool water and air dry if the fabric is machine-washable.

5. Wash gently in the sink with a mild detergent if the fabric is hand-wash only.

How to Bannish Bad Breath

Don't let your tongue become a dirty carpet.

According to WebMD, bad breath often strikes when people aren't properly taking care of their oral health. The odor is usually caused by decaying food particles and bacteria in your mouth. That's why brushing and flossing your teeth is so important, but don't forget to gently brush your tongue to get rid of even more bacteria.

Here are some ways to prevent bad breath:

A clean tongue goes a long way. According to Stephen Z. Wolner, a dentist in private practice in New York City. "Your tongue microscopically is like a shaggy carpet. There are millions of filaments on your tongue that trap tiny food particles and bacteria," he says. Get in the habit of regularly cleaning your tongue using a toothbrush, the edge of a spoon, or a tongue cleaner. If you have any mouth guards or oral devices, make sure to clean them thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth.

Mouthwash isn't a bad idea, but it's only a temporary fix.
Granted, a little mouthwash comes in handy before a romantic dinner for two, but it masks the odor instead of tackling the source of your problem.

Chew gum like it's going out of style. Believe it or not, saliva is your best weapon against bad breath. That's why dry mouth, often caused by certain medications or medical conditions, leads to odor problems. By washing away food particles and bacteria, saliva helps to eliminate odor, too. Mints, on the other hand, don't usually stimulate saliva production and only temporarily mask bad odor.

When you chew gum it makes you salivate, and the more saliva you have in your mouth the fewer bacteria you have. It not only mechanically washes bacteria out, but we have antiseptic and enzymes in our saliva that kill bacteria.

Chew gum with xylitol. While anything that makes you salivate will improve your breath, a gum that is sweetened with xylitol is your best option. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that not only increases salvation but also works to prevent bacteria from replicating in the mouth.

Choose cinnamon -- it's sweeter. A recent study of the cinnamon-flavored gum Big Red found that cinnamon might have breath-odor fighting abilities. Unlike other flavors, cinnamon is not just a cover-up, Wolner tells WebMD. In fact, he says, an ingredient in the flavoring appears to actually decrease the bacteria in your mouth. The only problem is that sugar gums are bad for your teeth, so stick to sugarless cinnamon-flavored gum instead, like Stride Gum's cinnamon.

Drink more water. The older you get the more likely you are to get dehydrated. You might not even notice you're thirsty, so make drinking water a habit, because water will help keep the bacteria in your mouth to a minimum. Drinking water has a lot of health benefits, and preventing bad breath is one of them.

Rule out rare causes for bad breath. While most bad breath can be banished with simple hygienic steps, there are times when dental or medical conditions might be the culprit. Make an appointment with your dentist if an unsavory odor takes residence in your mouth. On rare occasions bad breath can signal a larger problem, including infection, and even kidney or liver failure, you should also visit a doctor if your dentist doesn't find a cause for your bad breath problem.

Have a slice of bread. If you're on one of the many popular low-carb diets, remember that bad breath or "ketone breath" is a potential side effect when you always have that burger sans bun. Whole grain bread is the best choice. You can try different methods of masking the odor, such as gum or tart candies, but adding a few carbs to your daily diet might also do the trick.

How to Apply Fake Eyelashes

If you are looking for a dramatic look, fake eyelashes really do the trick.

If you have a steady hand you can definitely pull it off without the help of a makeup artist by following these steps:

Step 1: Using tweezers, dip the base end of the lashes into the glue, then place the lashes as close to the baseline of your own as you can, filling in wherever you want the greatest impact (generally, the mid to outer lashes look fabulous in false lashes).

Step 2:
Press gently, but firmly with something blunt. Hold the lash in place for about 5 seconds until the glue has a chance to hold.

Step 3: Let the glue dry, and then apply a dark eyeliner to camouflage the line of the fake lashes and then apply your mascara. The mascara will help blend your own lashes with the fake ones, and make your eyes look fuller and larger.

Step 4:
To remove, use the same makeup remover you would use to remove mascara. Then gently pull them off with tweezers.

EXTRA TIPS:

  • The assortment of fake eyelashes are pretty good at drug stores like RiteAid, CVS, etc.
  • You should practice before the event you plan to wear them for. Buy extra just in case you mess up the first time.
  • Never fall asleep with them on. If you rub your eyes while you sleep and by accident pull them out, you might pull out some real eyelashes too.

How to pull off Flower Hair Accessories

I am a big fan of fake flower hair accessories. My sister, Tascha, has been doing this for a while and it always looks amazing on her. I just started to pick up on it, and I love it. I don't care that it's winter and that flowers aren't growing anymore. What I love about them is that they are a really great way to add a colorful accessory to your look in a feminine way.

Depending on how long your hair is, and how much you have, there are different ways to wear a flower in your hair.

Side part with the flower holding your hair back on one side. One side will look like the flower is holding back your hair, the other side will be free and wild.

Flower on a head band. Place the flower on a plain headband towards the side a little bit. This gives the look that your hair is pulled back, and out of your face.

Low ponytail or bun with a flower near the elastic. This is a really easy way to dress up a low ponytail or make a bun less uptight looking.

Half ponytail with flower. Keep in mind, if you are going to be taking a lot of pictures, the flower won't be visible in them. However this will really make your half ponytail look more interesting.

A few suggestions...

If you have big hair: We love the flower clips because with all that hair, the splash of color in a hair flower really stands out. If you have big hair, I would suggests a 3" or 4" flower. If you choose anything less it will probably get lost in the hair.

If you have thin hair: Choose a smaller flower hair clip, maybe 2" in dimension or less. You don't want the hair clip to take over your entire head.

How to Re-Wear a Dress

Sometimes you just don't want to re-wear the same exact dress to an event, especially if you will see the same people. It's annoying to look the same in pictures. Also, you don't want to be that person that get's the back handed compliment from your Great Aunt Gretchen "oh dahhhhlinggg your dress is lovvvvvely... of courssse, I liked it last 2 times you wore it."

That being said, there are many ways to re-wear a dress to make it look different and new. You would be amazed. Having such a large family, the "dressy" events never seem to end. My sisters and I take great pride in our skill of re-wearing dresses. Here are some of our tricks:

Before you buy: Before you buy any dress you need to assess how many times you can potentially wear this dress. If it costs $300, but you can wear it 5 times.. in my book that dress is $60. You are better off buying a great $300 dress vs. a one-time wear $150 dress.

Cardigans: A cardigan changes the entire look from the waist up. If you are re-wearing your dress to a "dressy" event, find a fancier cardigan. There are so many out there, embellished, lacy, gem toned, floral, colorful, etc.

Shoes, Purse, Jewelery, etc: Your shoes and purse should usually go together (not match per se, but "go"). If you have a simple black dress, you can try a colorful shoe and a colorful purse. Try hoops instead of pearls, silver instead of gold... a charm bracelet instead of bangles. Or maybe even a belt.

Hair: Your hair really changes your look and the entire vibe of your entire outfit. Re-wear your dress with a low pony tail, a flower clip, a headband, or other hair accessories. I am a big fan of the flower clips. I have them in many colors. You can also clip them on your dress to make them look like part of it.

Alterations: If you are really tired of wearing your dress, take it to the tailor and get it altered. I do this a lot, it really cracks up my tailor. Usually I bring it in and try and on and ask him what he can do with it. Take the sleeves off, shorten it, taken it in, whatever. Usually it costs me about $12 - $24 and it looks brand new. Think Project Runway.

Change / Add Buttons: Find some fancy buttons online, colorful, cameo antique looking, pearl, etc. The fanciest of buttons are usually less than $12 for a dozen. If your dress has buttons swap them out. OR if you have a plain black dress, get some fancy buttons bring them to your tailor with the dress and tell him to sew them around the neckline. Congrats, you will have made your dress look $100 more expensive with a few buttons.

Some parting words:
Don't be ashamed to wear the same dress over and over again. My sisters and I think of it as a sport. You win by wearing the dress the most times, and the least distinguishable from the original.

How to Look Good in Leggings

Leggings with Tunics: The key to this is to make sure the tunic covers your hips and butt. Because leggings fit so close to the body, you want your top to come down past your hips.

Leggings with Dresses: Dresses that fall at or above the knee can work with leggings. This is one case where a close-fitting dress would look good with leggings, such as a jersey knit dress with a wide belt at the waist. Leggings also work with bohemian fashions or billowy, casual dresses for women.

Leggings with Skirts: One look that's popular is pairing leggings with mini-skirts, particularly denim skirts. Slip into a pair of flat shoes, add a coordinating top and this is an easy, casual outfit perfect for weekends.

Leggings with Jackets & Vests: I have seen a lot of this lately. Both are looks that are very flattering to almost everyone. With jackets choose a mens style blazer that falls below the waist. If you are going for a vest, choose a snug tunic and a short vest.

OTHER TIPS

Leggings for Petites: Make sure your top is proportioned for shorter women so that it doesn't fall past your mid-thighs – otherwise, it can look like you're wearing a dress with leggings underneath. That's OK if it's the look you are going for- but be conscious about what looks best on your body. Also, your ensemble should be as monochromatic as possible for an elongating look.

Leggings for Tall Women: Make sure you wear a shirt that comes down far enough so that your butt isn't exposed.

Choosing the right shoes: Leggings look best with flats, such as ballerina flats, or plain pumps, as well as with boots. However, you can pretty much wear any shoes with them except sneakers.

Don't wear a tight shirt: Because leggings are so fitted, it's best to steer clear of tight shirts for the best look. These items work better when your overall outfit is balanced, pairing roomy with fitted.

Don't wear leggings with sweatshirts: While this is fine for hanging around a college dormitory, it's not a chic look anywhere else.

Don't wear a short top with leggings: Your shirt, whether it's a tunic or other A-line top, should fall past your butt, not stop at the waist. This is especially important if your leggings fall on the thin side -- you don't want to look like you left the house in only a shirt and tights.

Don't wear leggings in place of pants: Leggings are an accessory, not a garment. They shouldn't be expected to take the place of a pair of slacks, but instead to add to the flair of a casual outfit.

2 Easy Ways to Stretch Your Shoes

So you got a new pair of shoes and they're gorgeous, but they're a bit too tight. This happens to me a lot because I have really wide feet. Here are two tricks I use that are really easy ways to make them fit better.

1) Use rubbing alcohol
(This works with leather pumps, sandals, and boots.)

  • Rub the alcohol into the critical spots.
  • Then put on a pair of sweat socks and walk around your house with them on for an hour or so.
  • Alcohol usually dries faster than water, and won't damage your shoes-- contrary to water, alcohol doesn't dry out the leather.

2) Use some baggies & throw them in the freezer
(I know this sounds silly, but it works! I use this rather on rougher shoes; ie patent leather)

  • Take a plastic ziplock baggy and fill it with water.
  • Put the baggy in the shoe
  • Put the shoe in the freezer overnight- believe it or not as the water solidifies the shoe will be stretched.
  • If it doesn't work for the first, repeat it several times until you'll stretch them more.

Stay Beautiful in Allergy Season

Purple circles, itchy & watery eyes, sneezing, and blotchy skin. All signs that summer is over and allergy season is here. Instead of looking like a pock marked, fluid leaking relative of Shrek, you might want to use some of these tips.

Moisturize the T-zone

When allergies are at their worst, you will likely have watery eyes, an itchy nose, and spend time rubbing your eyes and face. You will find you develop a red nose and blotchy red cheeks too, and the skin might dry and peel or crack. To avoid this, moisturize your T-zone from your forehead down your nose and around your mouth and cheeks to keep the skin hydrated.

Cortisone Creams

If your face it blotchy, inflamed, itching or burning due to allergies, you might find that moisturizing with a cortisone cream in the T-zone is more effective than using just a plain moisturizer. Cortisone cream will help with the inflammation and redness, and the cream will moisturize and keep the skin soft.

Tissues to go

No one is beautiful with snot running down their nose. Always carry around a small pack of tissues to use as needed. If you can't find a small pack, put a bunch in a ziplock baggie and place it in your purse.

Eye Gels, Masks, Coolers

Dark circles around the eyes are a common problem with allergy sufferers, and usually this includes puffiness and tenderness around the eyes. Using cooling eye gels and cooling masks for the eyes that you put in the freezer can cool down your eyes and help take some of the itch and sting away, while reducing puffiness.

Get Rid of the Red Blotches

Allergies often cause red blotches on the skin, and if moisturizing is not enough to prevent them, you can conceal them by using a yellow base concealer. The yellow will help offset the red color of your skin, and then you can apply your makeup as you normally would.

Makeup Tips

Avoid using blush when you are suffering from allergies, because you face will tend to be reddish as it is, and you don't want to add to that look. Also, consider wearing slightly more eye shadow than you normally wear, to draw attention to the top part of the eye and not the watery-ness of your allergy eyes. When suffering from allergies, use more earth tones and avoid pinks, reds, red-based colors.

Listerine Breath Strips

Sometimes your throat gets a little scratchy, but not quite enough to need cough drops. The Listerine Breath Strips are so strong that they tend to not only freshen your breath, but sooth your scratchy throat and momentarily clear your sinuses.

Voila, there you go... beautiful as always.

Natural Ways to Prevent Breasts from Sagging

Forget about surgery. In order to help prevent sagging there is a list of things you can do. Start early!

Moisturize
Massage your breasts once in a while with moisturizing cream to help them maintain it's elasticity and good posture. Exfoliate and keep the
skin healthy.

Exercise
Tone your pectoral muscles by doing exercises that are meant for this particular area. Exercise using dumbbells because they will tone your breasts and arms, and do chest press exercises. You don't have to over do it, you don't want to build muscle mass, you just want to tone so don't push yourself too hard.

Posture
Keep a good posture of your body. Don't arch your back by keeping your shoulders forward because your breast will look like they are sagging even if they aren't. Keep your back and shoulders straight to make them look more firm.

Diet & Heath
Watch your weight because as you gain weight your breasts become larger and if you gain weight too quickly your skin could stretch beyond it's stretching capacity causing stretch marks. Also gaining and losing weight regularly could cause sagging breasts because the skin could lose it's elasticity due to constant stretching and shrinking.

Hydrate
Drink a lot of water, approximately 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin and body hydrated. Water is as important for your organism as well as for your skin because it will maintain skins elasticity.

Support
Wear a bra when you are running so they won't bounce and stretch the skin to much. It will give you the support you need and allow you to be more comfortable while you exercise as well.

Burn 300 Calories in 30 Minutes

Great Article from http://exercise.about.com
---------------------------------------

If you're trying to burn calories and lose weight using cardio machines, I have a challenge for you: Put down the magazine, turn off the television and (gasp) stop looking at your watch. Okay, you can keep the walkman, but everything else has to go. Why the drastic measures? If you aren't paying attention, you may not be working as hard as you think.

Cardio Workouts at the Gym

The following workouts should give you some ideas on how to spice up your workouts and burn more calories by raising and lowering the intensity. Modify each workout according to your fitness level and feel free to increase or decrease speed, incline and/or workout time to fit your needs.

For each exercise, warm up with 5-10 minutes of light cardio and keep track of your Perceived Exertion or monitor your heart rate. Use this calorie calculator to determine how many calories you're burning. End with a cool down and stretch.

Treadmill

  • Start with incline at zero and speed at a comfortable pace (walking or jogging). Perceived Exertion (PE)=Level 5 (see Perceived Exertion Scale).
  • 1 Minute: Raise incline one or more percent every 15 seconds. PE=5-6
  • 1 Minute: Reduce the incline one percent every fifteen seconds. PE=6-7
  • 3 Minutes: Walk or jog at a steady pace. PE=5
  • Repeat entire cycle for 30 or more minutes
  • Approximate calories burned: 320(based on 140 lb person)

Elliptical Trainer

  • Using manual program, enter workout time as 30 minutes and choose appropriate level
  • 6 Minutes: Set ramps (if option) and resistance levels at medium level. PE=5
  • 2 Minutes: Set ramps at highest level and increase resistance every 30 seconds. PE=6-8
  • 2 Minutes: Lower ramps and resistance to comfortable level. PE=5
  • 6 minutes: Set ramps and resistance to medium and go backwards. PE=5-6
  • Repeat entire cycle for remaining time
  • Calories Burned: 250-300 (based on 140 lb person)

Bike

  • Using the manual program, enter your workout time as 30 minutes and choose appropriate level
  • 5 Minutes: Cycle at a comfortable pace. PE=5.
  • 5 Minutes: Raise level several increments and decrease a level every 30 seconds. PE=6-8.
  • 5 Minutes: Cycle at comfortable pace. PE=5.
  • 5 Minutes: Raise level higher than before and decrease a level every 30 seconds. PE=6-8
  • 5 Minutes: Cycle at comfortable pace. PE=5.
  • 5 Minutes: At current level, increase a level each minute. PE=7-8.
  • Calories Burned: 245 (based on 140 lb person)

Hit the Road

Instead of spending 40 minutes inside a sweaty gym, head outside for a walk/run.

  • Warm up with a brisk walk/slow jog for 5-10 minutes.
  • Jog/walk briskly for 3 minutes
  • Sprint or speed walk for 30 seconds
  • Repeat this cycle 6 for the remaining time, keeping PE between 5-8.

As you can see, it's easy to spice up your workouts by playing around with your speed, incline and resistance and alternating high intensity intervals with recovery periods. This not only keeps you from getting bored, it also helps burn more calories and increases your endurance very quickly. Use this technique with any cardio activity to keep things interesting!

How to: Recycle BareMinerals Makeup Containers

Another reason why I love BareMinerals: you can recycle the makeup containers. After you finished with any of their products, never throw away the containers.

Here is how to do it:

1. After you have no makeup left, remove the divider. Look closely to the edge, you will notice that you can remove the divider with either your finger nail or a butter knife.

2. Throw away the divider and clean out the container.

3. Clean out the container with dish soap, or throw it in the silverware tray in the dishwasher.

Why is this awesome?
  • Traveling purposes: no more paying to check your luggage. No more lugging around a huge bottle of something, if you are just going away for a few days.
  • You can put your favorite hair gel, shampoo, conditioner, makeup remover, lotion, etc. into these containers.
  • They are small enough to put in your carry-on luggage and pass through security.
  • No more buying "travel size", or travel containers that sometimes explode when they are packed too tightly.
  • Since the lid is screw on, you never need to worry about any leaking.
  • There are other uses, like for make shift pill or earring box.

If you don't already have BareMinerals, you can
check them out here at Ulta.com. You get a free 10 day BareMinerals travel foundation with a mini brush.
