Eye Makeup for Your Eye Shape

Determining eye shape is just as important as choosing the right colors for your coloring. Depending on the shape of your eyes you should choose different colors and ways of applying eye makeup. Learn how to determine eye shape and apply eye makeup for each eye shape.

Eye Makeup for close-set eyes
If the space between the inner corners of your eyes is shorter than the width of one eye, you have close-set eyes. So your aim is to make your eyes look further apart. To create the illusion of width, you should emphasize the outer corners.
  1. Apply light eyeshadow from the inner corner of your eye to the middle of your eyelid (from lashes to browbone) to widen the space between the eyes. Keep small highlight color in the inner corner of the eye.
  2. Extend the darker eyeshadow to the outer corner of your eye from lashline to browbone.
  3. Use the most intense color of eyeshadow in the outer corner.
  4. Use eyeliner to draw a very thin line along the upper eyelashes. To bring the attention to the outer edge of the eye thus making your eyes appear further apart, apply eyeliner so that it becomes thicker near the outer corner of your eyes (both top and bottom). You should draw the line as close to the lashes as possible.
  5. Use mascara in the outer corners of the eyes.
  6. Widen the space between the brows by plucking. Extend the brows with a brow pencil line at the ends.
Eye Makeup for wide-set eyes
If the space between the inside corners of eyes is wider than the width of one eye, you have wide-set eyes. So your aim is to reduce the space between the eyes to make your eyes look close together. To bring eyes closer together, you should emphasize the inner corners by using darker colors in the inner corners.
  1. Reduce the space between the eyes by applying dark eyeshadow in the inner corner.
  2. Apply the lighter eyeshadow to the outer two-thirds of the lid from lashline to browbone.
  3. Use eyeliner to draw a very thin line from inner to outer corners on both upper and lower lids.
  4. Pencil eyebrows a little closer to the nose. Don't extend eyebrows out at the ends

Makeup for prominent eyes
Prominent eyes which set far forward in the face tend to dominate the facial features.
With special makeup prominent eyes can be made less obvious:
  1. Apply dark eyeshadow over the entire lid and extend eyeshadow into entire eye crease
  2. Use a highlighter under the brow to lighten and lift.
  3. Use the eyeliner to minimize the lid
  4. Apply plenty of mascara to emphasize top lashes.

Makeup for almond eyes
These are the most common eye shape. Almond eyes are characterized by upswept outer corner. Almond eyes considered the classic eye shape and therefore if you have almond eyes you can easily experiment with various eye makeup looks.
  1. Apply light eyeshadow on the lid from lash to brow. Use neutral eyeshadow.
  2. Apply dark eyeshadow of the same color on outer corner of the eyelid.
  3. Blend light eyeshade under the brow for highlighting.
  4. Use eyeliner on the upper lid to make almond eyes appear large. If you want your almond eyes look more round, stop eyeliner before the outer corner of the eye.
  5. Apply mascara on upper lashes with emphasis on outer corners.

Makeup for small eyes
They are proportionately smaller in comparison to the rest of the facial features.
  1. Apply light shadow on the eyelids.
  2. Apply medium-toned shadow in the creases.
  3. To give the eye more prominence, apply highlighting shade under the brow
  4. Line upper and lower lids with soft-colored eyeliner to enhance small eyes.
  5. Apply black mascara on upper lashes.

Makeup for hooded eyes
If you can't see your eyelid, you have hooded eyes. To enhance hooded eyes:
  1. Apply lighter shadow in the inner corner of the eye and on the brow bone .
  2. Apply medium or dark shadow on the crease and hooded area.
  3. Line upper lid to open the eye.
  4. Apply black mascara to upper lashes.

Makeup for round eyes
To elongate round eyes and make them appear more almond-shaped:
  1. Apply medium eyeshadow on the eyelid up to the crease.
  2. Extend the shade to the outer eye corner and continue down along the lower lid.
  3. Use darker liner to line top and bottom lid. Extend eyeliner out and up beyond the eyelid at the outer corner.
  4. Apply mascara for top lashes only, more on outer half.

Makeup for deep-set eyes
You have deep-set eyes if you can see some of your eye lid in the outer corners of your eyes, but this section of eye lid narrows as it gets closer to the inside corners of your eyes. If you have deep set eyes:
  1. Apply light or medium eyeshadow from the inner corner of your eye to the outer to bring deep set eyes forward
  2. Apply dark color on the eye crease
  3. Use eyeliner on upper lids
  4. Use mascara on top lashes only.
  5. Raise the brows slightly by penciling in a little above the born

How to Thicken Eyelashes Naturally

Olive Oil: Olive oil has a miraculous effect both on hair growth as well as the condition of our hair. Eyelashes can also benefit of the effect of a similar natural resource of vitamins and nutrients. Pour a few drops of olive oil to a cotton ball and apply it to your lashes. Leave the treatment on for 5 minutes then rinse it off with tepid water. This will eliminate all traces of oil from your eyelashes still would leave them with a shiny and fabulous condition. Keep on with this ritual for at least 4 weeks for guaranteed result.

Vitamins: The lack of vital vitamins in our system can also lead to the decrease in the quality of our eyelashes. The regular consumption of a healthy nutrient as vitamin B and D is of crucial importance to increase the resistance of our eyelashes towards harmful factors as inappropriate use of mascara or eyelash curlers.

Vaseline: One of the ageless methods to increase both normal hair growth as well as the texture of the lashes is Vaseline. This ingredients can have a magical effect on our lashes especially when treating them regularly.

In order to have the desired effect make sure you apply some Vaseline to the particular spot right before going to bed. The Vaseline will exercise its effect overnight. Apply some on an eyelash brush and comb your lashes with it. In the morning rinse it off with tepid water. You'll see the immediate results.

Skip Eyelash Curlers for a bit: In order to give your eyelashes time to recover from the damages it is highly recommended to skip eyelash curlers for a month. This will allow the hair follicles to benefit from the miraculous effect of thickening remedies. Test the effect of the treatments mentioned above while not appealing to artificial curlers. Often these instruments can exercise a harsh effect on the texture of the lashes and in severe cases can result in breakage.

Vitamin E Oil: Enhancing the growth of eyelashes can be also done through the external use of nutrient oils. Vitamin E oil is one of the great remedies to stop hair fall and restore the spotless quality of the lashes. Purchase a little bottle of this vitamin from the local green shop and use it with confidence. Use an eyelash brush to apply a few drops of this oil on your lashes. Brush them with care to boost their growth and thickness. Keep on with this ritual for at least a month.

13 Tips for Applying Mascara

Tip #1:
Try a spoolie (a disposable mascara wand). Sweep a clean, fresh mascara wand through lashes when they're wet. You can buy a pack at any store that carries specialty beauty products. You can also recycle old mascara wands. When you finish a mascara, clean the wand in a capful of eye makeup remover, then wash with soap and dry. Keep it clean by washing it whenever you wash your makeup tools.

Tip #2: Mix mascaras. A trick makeup artists use to make lashes pop is apply one coat of lengthening mascara, followed by one coat of thickening mascara. Remove excess product with a clean spoolie wand.

Tip #3: Don't shy away from colored mascara. Basic mascara rules are simple: Black works for everyone but can be harsh on light-skinned blondes. Blondes should opt for brown/black by day and reserve black for night. Blue mascara brightens blue eyes while purple mascara makes brown eyes pop.

Tip #4: Use an eyelash curler Curling lashes gives eyes the appearance of being wider and brighter. Shoot warm air from your blow dryer on the mascara curler for 3-5 seconds to warm it up before curling lashes. Touch it first to make sure it's not too hot. Shu Uemura makes the most popular eyelash curler on the market.

Tip #5: Give a few coats to the edges by blinking. Blink onto the brush to give ends an extra coat.

Tip #6: Powder under the eye before applying mascara. Sometimes mascara smudges because it's attracted to oily concealer or eye creams.

Tip #7: Zig-zag the wand. Zig-zagging the wand back and forth during application helps cut down clumps.

Tip #8: For a dramatic look, apply mascara only to the upper lashes. To make eyes seem wider, apply to the bottom, too.

Tip #9: Use a mascara primer. Primers coat lashes and separate them before you apply mascara. Makeup artists swear by mascara primer. I tried it and like it, but because it's an added step, I usually use primer only on special occasion when I spend more time on my makeup.

Tip #10: Want that 2nd coat? Just make sure to do it before the first coat dries, otherwise you'll get clumps.

Tip #11: Do NOT pump wand in and out of the tube. This only introduces air into the tube, which will cause your mascara to dry out sooner than it should.

Tip #12: Another smudge-proof tip -- bend the wand. A top makeup artist once gave his secret to his steady hand: he always bends his wand at a right angle.

Tip #13: Wait five seconds before blinking. You don't want to paint your lids, do you?

How to Apply Fake Eyelashes

If you are looking for a dramatic look, fake eyelashes really do the trick.

If you have a steady hand you can definitely pull it off without the help of a makeup artist by following these steps:

Step 1: Using tweezers, dip the base end of the lashes into the glue, then place the lashes as close to the baseline of your own as you can, filling in wherever you want the greatest impact (generally, the mid to outer lashes look fabulous in false lashes).

Step 2:
Press gently, but firmly with something blunt. Hold the lash in place for about 5 seconds until the glue has a chance to hold.

Step 3: Let the glue dry, and then apply a dark eyeliner to camouflage the line of the fake lashes and then apply your mascara. The mascara will help blend your own lashes with the fake ones, and make your eyes look fuller and larger.

Step 4:
To remove, use the same makeup remover you would use to remove mascara. Then gently pull them off with tweezers.

EXTRA TIPS:

  • The assortment of fake eyelashes are pretty good at drug stores like RiteAid, CVS, etc.
  • You should practice before the event you plan to wear them for. Buy extra just in case you mess up the first time.
  • Never fall asleep with them on. If you rub your eyes while you sleep and by accident pull them out, you might pull out some real eyelashes too.

Eye Shadow for your Eye Color

Every time I step into any cosmetic store I get lured in by all the interesting colored eyeshadow. I always find myself buying some obscure color that I thought would look awesome on me, but never does.

Based on your eye color, certain shades will look better on you than others. Here are some basic guidelines to follow:

FOR BLUE EYES
Tried and True: taupe, gray, violet, purple, deep blue (a darker shade than your eye color makes your eyes really blue), black (mix it with bright blue for a smoky effect)
Trendy Favorites: silver, turquoise, fuschia (brightens any shade of blue)

GREEN or HAZEL EYES
Tried and True: brown, apricot, purple, plum, deep khaki or forest green (because they are in the same greenish family, they brighten green eyes)

Trendy Favorites: gold, glowing, lime-green, really light green, bright purple

BROWN EYES

Tried and True: copper, bronze, champagne (soft pink with a touch of apricot), brown (for a doe-eyed look), beige, and khaki-green (lighter shades add highlight)

Trendy Favorites: tangerine, royal blue, hot pink, lime-green (the contrast adds punch to brown)

ALL EYES
Tried and True (Classic): navy or charcoal base to define and a powder-blue shadow for highlighting (it brightens your brow bone so any eye color pops)

Trendy Favorites: silver-sparkle shadow makes all eyes look edgy.

Eyeliner Tips and Tricks

Out of all the make-up there is, I think eye-liner application is the toughest.

What is better- liquid or pencil?

I have tried both. I don't like either. I have a shaky hand and liquid takes me too long to apply. Also most liquid eye-liners will make you look like the bride of Frankenstein with the first tear or drop of rain. Also, most fluid liners tend to burn when you get them in your eyes. On the other hand, pencil usually will smudge or wear off before the end of the work day. Pencil is usually not as dramatic or precise.

Here is my suggestion: MAC's Fluidline. One of my best girlfriends, Melissa, originally suggested this. She was right on with her recommendation. The Fluidline is a little quarter size pot with like thick mud-like pigmented liner. You apply it with a thin "eye-liner" brush. What I love about this is (1) it's easy to apply with a brush (2) Never smudges, go to the gym, cry, (3) the little pot/container lasts about 3 months if you use it every day (4) it's only $15.00.. you can buy it on MAC's website or any MAC Store.

How to apply:

Step 1: Start with a completely bare eye, no shadow or mascara.

Step 2: Apply liquid liner in the upper lashes with the brush. Get close as possible to the lashes. The result is not supposed to be a line. It's supposed to look as if the lashes themselves are super thick at the root.

Step 3: Wait 2 minutes for it to dry, then apply mascara.

Step 4: Compare eye to other naked eye and see if you love the results.

Step 5: Before you go to sleep make sure you wash your face. I use Pond's cold cream to remove eye makeup.

Stay Beautiful in Allergy Season

Purple circles, itchy & watery eyes, sneezing, and blotchy skin. All signs that summer is over and allergy season is here. Instead of looking like a pock marked, fluid leaking relative of Shrek, you might want to use some of these tips.

Moisturize the T-zone

When allergies are at their worst, you will likely have watery eyes, an itchy nose, and spend time rubbing your eyes and face. You will find you develop a red nose and blotchy red cheeks too, and the skin might dry and peel or crack. To avoid this, moisturize your T-zone from your forehead down your nose and around your mouth and cheeks to keep the skin hydrated.

Cortisone Creams

If your face it blotchy, inflamed, itching or burning due to allergies, you might find that moisturizing with a cortisone cream in the T-zone is more effective than using just a plain moisturizer. Cortisone cream will help with the inflammation and redness, and the cream will moisturize and keep the skin soft.

Tissues to go

No one is beautiful with snot running down their nose. Always carry around a small pack of tissues to use as needed. If you can't find a small pack, put a bunch in a ziplock baggie and place it in your purse.

Eye Gels, Masks, Coolers

Dark circles around the eyes are a common problem with allergy sufferers, and usually this includes puffiness and tenderness around the eyes. Using cooling eye gels and cooling masks for the eyes that you put in the freezer can cool down your eyes and help take some of the itch and sting away, while reducing puffiness.

Get Rid of the Red Blotches

Allergies often cause red blotches on the skin, and if moisturizing is not enough to prevent them, you can conceal them by using a yellow base concealer. The yellow will help offset the red color of your skin, and then you can apply your makeup as you normally would.

Makeup Tips

Avoid using blush when you are suffering from allergies, because you face will tend to be reddish as it is, and you don't want to add to that look. Also, consider wearing slightly more eye shadow than you normally wear, to draw attention to the top part of the eye and not the watery-ness of your allergy eyes. When suffering from allergies, use more earth tones and avoid pinks, reds, red-based colors.

Listerine Breath Strips

Sometimes your throat gets a little scratchy, but not quite enough to need cough drops. The Listerine Breath Strips are so strong that they tend to not only freshen your breath, but sooth your scratchy throat and momentarily clear your sinuses.

Voila, there you go... beautiful as always.

Most Embarrassing Beauty Secrets Revealed

Here you have it... I have polled my friends for their most embarrassing beauty secrets. They are anonymous this time :)

"If I am feeling bloated I take a hot bath, for like 30- 60 minutes (usually depends on how into my book at the time!). It makes you lose like 1 lb of water weight. It is obviously not any real weight, but definitely helps make you feel less bloated on those yucky days!"

"I literally believe grapefruit is the miracle fruit- it heals all - everyone knows the grapefruit diet - which btw totally works - but my beauty secret is that when I am breaking out I eat grapefruit like crazy and that does the trick! Maybe even up to 2 a day.. as a bonus with all that fiber not only will your skin look great but you might lose weight in the process."

"Before I have a date I slather myself in Bliss FatGirl Slim. I think it works miracles! It makes my tummy feel smoother and smells nice and peperminty."

"I just got a ped egg. What a great invention. I can sit scraping away all the cracks and rough spots on my feet and it collects in a little holder so I don't have to worry about making a mess. When you empty the little egg out it's pretty satisfying to see all the grossness you've just eliminated from your feet. "

"I have two although one may not be that embarrassing:
1) I do pushups and tricep dips in my bedroom immediately before wearing anything sleeveless (dresses, going out shirts, etc.) to make my muscles look more toned. Have been doing that since Brandeis!
2) I mix very dark liquid foundation (just a small drop) with my face moisturizer to make me look tan. This can be done with legs and arms too."

"Taking omega 3 pills makes me feel skinnier, I use good bye cellulite by nivea even though it probably doesn't work, I use sally hansens cream for my mustache, and I think shaving with conditioner makes you legs smoother."

"If you can stand a little pain - I like the epilator at CVS. It's an electric device with a bunch of tweezers to get rid of hair in any unwanted places. It needs to be charged once in a blue moon. There's no mess compared to waxing and it costs only $30 or so. Also you can get rid of hairs that are much shorter (who wants to go weeks without shaving for a wax) and you do it yourself so no need for some woman to be that close to your crotch. Since it's a little painful (you can feel it pulling out your hair)- you may opt to using it strictly for touchups between waxing sessions. I think shaving is so outdated. No one wants to rub up against stubbly legs, underarms or bikinis."

Secret to Awesome Eyelashes

1. You need the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler.

2. Take your Shu and warm it up for 5 seconds by blowing your hair dryer on it.

3. Test to make sure it's not too hot by touching it to the back of your hand. If it's too hot for your hand, wait a few seconds.

4. Begin by tilting your head up and inserting lashes into the curler as close to the base as possible; press for a few seconds. Always BEFORE you put the mascara on.

5. Be careful not to do it too tight, otherwise you will get a crimp not a curl.

6. Apply mascara!

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler & The Beginning

This is the main reason why I am starting this Blog. I had a friend from out of town come visit me. The first thing she said to me as she pulled out her make-up bag was, "I HAVE DISCOVERED THE BEST BEAUTY SECRET... the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler!!"... I have had it for about 3 years, I thought everyone knew about it. How could she have not known about it? Then months later one of my sisters sent a frantic mass email... about a new discovery... the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler.... yawn... but then I realized, how did all these other people not know about this? It's by far the best eyelash curler in the world. It doesn't pinch, it curls at the exact perfect angle, and make the shortest eyelashes look curly. For only $19.00 you can say good-bye to fake eyelashes forever.
